“Resolve to Side with God”

Romans 14:23

But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

Thoughts for Today:

Have you ever had some doubts that what you were about to do was acceptable to God, but then went ahead and did it anyway? One biblical commentator once wrote regarding this common human dilemma: "Take heed of acting contrary to the dictates of a doubting conscience. First be persuaded that what you do is lawful, before you venture to do it."

Not long ago, a friend of mine was getting married and decided to have his bachelor party in Las Vegas to make it more convenient for those scattered around the country to attend. After much prayer, I decided to decline the invitation. Why? Simple, it was because I had doubts my attendance would be acceptable and pleasing to God. Could I have gone and been an example of faithfulness? Of course, but I had an unsettled feeling about the event, so I chose to follow my conscience rather than join my friends. Why was I unsettled? Because the brother of the groom (who was hosting the party) had a reputation for parties which were less than godly. I decided it was best to not place myself in a potentially uncomfortable situation.

Here's the general rule Paul provides in our passage today: If a man does something he believes to be wrong, no matter what it is, then for him it is a sin. Therefore, what we do should always follow our understanding because "everything that does not come from faith is sin."

Questions to Ponder:

Our individual judgment or opinion on a subject may make what might be considered neutral (on the good versus evil scale), become wrong for us personally. And just the opposite is true as well -- we can't make what is evil or wrong become good -- no matter how much justification we can find. Are you having a challenge in this area? Are you in conflict with your conscience? Resolve to side with God.
