“Idols of Our Own Creation”

1 Corinthians 12:2

You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

Thoughts for Today:

Previously, Paul said idols were nothing. (1 Corinthians 8:4: "As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.") It's the reason that meat sacrificed to idols was not impure -- because they were a non-entity.

I think Habakkuk captures the essence of how idols influence our generation when he writes (Habakkuk 2:18): "Of what value is an idol, since a man has carved it? Or an image that teaches lies? For he who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak." Our idols may not be the same as in ancient times, but they are idols nonetheless. We worship cars, houses, sports teams, celebrities, science, the written word, fame, and fortune to name only a few. But they are still of our own making and ultimately destined to perish.

Questions to Ponder:

Where have you placed your focus? What influences you? What are your interests? Is it the latest celebrity gossip, your favorite sports team, or Jesus? This world is fading away. Have you invested your time wisely?
